Produce Manager

The position will be Monday to Friday, 8-hour days beginning at 7:30 most days and earlier for harvest days or special restock days. Flexibly to work 2 weekend days a month in exchange for a weekday the preceding week is required.

Position: Begins March 4th, 2024

           Ends October 31, 2024

Compensation: $18 - $23/hr DOE

 Perks: Half hour paid lunch daily

7 paid personal days off

2 paid holidays (July 4th and Labor Day)

        Access to any vegetables you want to consume

        33% off anything at the retail stand

  $200 stipend toward farm gear for the season

The Produce Manager (PM) is an hourly, seasonal position with a seasonally variable work schedule with most days beginning at 7:30 am. Support the Farm Manager in aspects of organic vegetable production for wholesale accounts and retail sales. The PM has a specific role in managing the greenhouse, vegetable wash and pack, food safety compliance, and record-keeping, in addition to normal field operations. There is a significant role in leading the farm crew. The PM reports to Tucker but also works with other farm staff, including the nursery manager. 

Expectations:

Participate in leadership of all day – to – day operations, including transplant preparation, seeding, thinning, irrigating and pest management.

Be able to communicate any criticisms, goals or problems constructively and in a timely manner with the management team.

Have a strong commitment to producing high quality plants and produce

Assist in aspects of organic vegetable production, including crop planning, greenhouse production, field operations, harvest, and vegetable wash and pack

Heavy Equipment operation

Help manage and maintain Farm equipment, infrastructure and facilities, including tractors and implements, trucks, greenhouse and high tunnels, barns, coolers, fencing, and irrigation systems.

Monitor, evaluate, and improve farm systems and develop annual crop plans

Assist with training seasonal field staff

Help to create a positive, open and friendly work atmosphere

Qualifications:

  • At least 1 year of direct, hands-on experience on a production–oriented organic vegetable farm

  • Ability to work independently with little supervision and as a member of a team

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Experience supervising other staff and volunteers

  • Ability to work long hours and perform physically strenuous farm tasks including repeatedly lifting up-to 50lbs in hot/inclement weather

  • Strong work ethic, willingness to be flexible

  • Well organized and detail oriented

  • Experience operating tractors and farm equipment 

  • Valid Driver’s license

Greenhouse Grower

          Ends August 31, 2024

Compensation: $17 - $21/ hour DOE

Perks: Half hour paid lunch daily

Work alongside the greenhouse manager -seedling and transplanting seedlings, irrigating nursery stock and doing organic pest management in the greenhouses and also facilitate sales at the retail stand. Reports directly to the greenhouse manager and also works with the vegetable farm operation as needed.

Expectations:

Be able to participate in all day – to – day operations, including transplant preparation, seeding, thinning, irrigating, pest management and staffing the retail stand.

Keep up to date with crop plans and ensure proper practices with record keeping on transplanting and seeding days.

Assist in supervising part time workers and volunteers in all greenhouse work while demonstrating best practices.

Assist in tagging plants, making sure they are the best quality possible, and keeping work areas organized and clean.

Re-stocking retail area with plants when required

Come up with new ideas to sell plants and retail materials when needed

Be able to communicate any criticisms, goals or problems constructively and in a timely manner with the management team.

Assist in set up and harvest of produce when possible

Have a strong commitment to producing high quality plants and produce

About the Farm

  • Cedar Rock Gardens is a first generation family farm, established in 2014 and owned and managed by Elise and Tucker Smith.

  • We use organic practices to grow diversified vegetables on 2.5 acres of leased land.

  • We utilize about 12,000 square feet of greenhouse space to grown vegetable crops under cover and use low till operations for field crops in Gloucester, MA.

  • The Farm supplies the local community with healthy food through our retail farm stand, online store, donations to multiple food access organizations and wholesale to local restaurants and grocery chains.

  • We have a seedling nursery that is busy early spring into mid-July.

  • We are a team-oriented farm focused on soil health, efficient systems, and high-quality production.
